Filter Plates

Avery Filter Company supplies high quality replacement filter plates for all filter presses. The original design of filter press dates back over 160 years and was of a true “Plate and Frame” design. The chambers were made of wood. Today, we offer plates in cast-iron, aluminum, stainless steel and various plastics, polypropylene being the most popular choice for its high heat and chemical resistance.

The details of selecting the appropriate plate stack for your application are critical to achieving successful filtration results. Many different porting arrangements, cake thicknesses and plate configurations are available. A selection can be made only after discussing the filtration characteristics of your material and reviewing process details such as feed stream solids content, density, pH, flow rate and whether or not cake washing is required.

Plate & Frames use a flush plate that supports the filter media. The frame collects the solids where the cake is formed. Like all filter presses, the plate stack is held closed with a hydraulic mechanism to prevent the plate stack from opening under feed pressure. Plate & Frame filters incorporate separate open frames for collecting the filter cake. When the cake is discharged from plate and frame filter press some cake can hang up on the lower surface of the frame so discharge is little more time consuming than on other designs. However, when an application requires change-out of filter media for every batch, this is an ideal filter press arrangement.

Recessed Chamber Plates combine the filter media support surface and the cake collection area into a single plate offering the advantage of one half the number of pieces required in the plate stack as compared to the plate and frame design. The plates are stronger and cake discharge is much more thorough allowing for use of automated plate shifting mechanisms. The cloth typically has a sewn or molded rubber feed eye and edges are either caulked in with gaskets or latex edged to avoid leakage.

Membrane Filter Plates are typically recessed as well but incorporate an impermeable flexible diaphragm that can mechanically squeeze the filter cake and offers significant advantages over conventional plate and frame or recessed chamber plate designs. Benefits include improved cake washing efficiency, shorter cycle times, higher cake solids content or increased liquid product yield. Membrane Plate Stack Conversions are often a consideration when looking to improve performance of an existing filter press installation. Avery Filter Company can retrofit your filter to our Membrane Filter Press Technology providing ancillary equipment including PLC controls, water squeeze components and safety interlocks as part of the conversion package.
